Artists Invited to Paint at Smith-Gilbert Gardens

Smith-Gilbert Gardens is hosting its 5th plein air painting competition on Thursday, October 18 and Friday, October 19.  Artists may paint scenes of the historic Hiram Butler house, some of our 30 pieces of contemporary sculpture, or choose from over 3,000 plant species!  Past winners of this competition include Junko Ono Rothwell, John Guernsey, Susan Knight Smith and Palma Rhoades.  Join us for this fun event.  Registration is $30.

Schedule of Events

Thursday, Oct. 18
• Arrive at Smith-Gilbert Gardens between 8:00 and 9:00 a.m.  Go past the historic Hiram Butler house and stop at the Carriage House.  You may unload your supplies there.  The Gardens will be open for artists until 5:00 p.m.
• Please plan to bring your lunch.  We have a picnic area for everyone to gather.
• There will be tables set up in the Carriage House for framing.
• At the end of the day, plan to store your supplies inside the Hiram Butler House or the Carriage House.  Both are protected with a security system.

Friday, Oct. 19
• Arrive between 8 and 9 a.m.
• Enjoy another beautiful day painting at Smith-Gilbert Gardens!
• Judging will start at 5:00 pm.  Please submit your two best pieces.  All pieces must be framed with wire hangers – no saw tooth type hangers, please.  Include your name, title of artwork and price on the back of the frame.
• Meet at 5:30 PM to enjoy reception and receive awards.

Saturday, Oct. 20
• Artwork will be on display and for sale during Smith-Gilbert Gardens Flavor of Fall Festival.
• October 2012 to May 2013
• Artwork will be on display in the Hiram Butler House and for sale.  Price your work to sell!  Smith-Gilbert Gardens will retain 30% of any sale.

All artists will be asked to leave at least one piece of art to be displayed in the Hiram Butler House until May 1, 2013.

Flavors of Fall Festival at Smith-Gilbert Gardens

Saturday, October 20
3:00 to 8:00 pm

Bring your family by Smith-Gilbert Gardens for our Flavors of Fall Festival on Saturday, Oct. 20th. Our flavors include music (square dancing and entertainment by the Bill Van Dyke trio), art (plein air paintings, portraits or wood carving), food from area food truck vendors and, depending on the weather, either hot chocolate or Coke floats. Many more activities are in store for our guests. Regular admission will apply. Please call the Garden office at 770-919-0248 for more information or to get an application for our apple pie baking contest!

• Watch spinner Veronica Carey.
• Pastel portraits while you wait by artist Don Maier.
• Wood Carvers.
• Poetry reading by Christopher Martin.
• Cake walk for children, pumpkin painting.
• Meet bonsai master in bonsai enclosure.
• View Plein Air artwork in Hiram Butler House.

3:30 pm
• Docent led tour.

4:00 pm
• Docent led tour.
• Square dancing with caller Frank Anderson.

6:00 pm
• Judging of apple pie baking contest by local celebrity chef Johnnie Gabriel. (Download Registration Form Now)
• Music by the Bill Van Dyke trio.
• Enjoy dinner from the Happy Belly Gourmet, Pressed for Time or King of Pops food trucks below the rose garden. Great Harvest Bread Company will also bring those award winning “cupcakes” they carry in the store.
• Enjoy hot chocolate or Coke floats.
